Introduction
We are in Muharram, the first month of the Hijri Calendar, 1445 A.H. It is a sacred month and the Prophet ๏ทบ used to fast a lot in this month. One of these days that the Prophet ๏ทบ used to fast is the Day of Ashura (the 10th Day of Muharram).

It was narrated that Ibn โAbbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day,the day of โAshooraโ, and this month โ meaning Ramadaan.

Why did the Prophet ๏ทบ fast on Ashura

Ibn โAbbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of โAshooraโ.
He said, โWhat is this?โ
They said, โThis is a good day, this is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moosa fasted on this day.โ
He said, โWe are closer to Moosa than you.โ So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
Fasting the day of โArafah I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of โAshooraโ I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.

How to fast Ashura
It is recommended when fasting ‘Ashura to also fast Taasuaโ (the 9th Day of Muharram).

โAbd-Allaah ibn โAbbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the day of โAshoora and told the people to fast, they said, โO Messenger of Allaah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.โ The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, โNext year, if Allaah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.โ But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had passed away.

Important Note:
Fasting Taasua and Ashura is recommended but not obligatory.
This year Taasua and ‘Ashura will be on Thursday 27th July and Friday 28th July, 2023.*
