Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said that Allah would say to the dwellers of Paradise:

O, Dwellers of Paradise, and they would say in response: At your service and pleasure, our Lord, the good is in Your Hand. He (the Lord) would say: Are you well pleased now? They would say: Why should we not be pleased, O Lord, when You have given us what You have not given to any of Your creatures? He would, however, say: May I not give you (something) even more excellent than that? And they would say: O Lord, what thing can be more excellent than this? And He would say: I shall cause My pleasure to alight upon you and I shall never be afterwards annoyed with you.

(In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful).

Introduction

We are in Muharram, the first month of the Hijri Calendar, 1445 A.H. It is a sacred month and the Prophet ﷺ used to fast a lot in this month. One of these days that the Prophet ﷺ used to fast is the Day of ‘Ashura (the 10th Day of Muharram).

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day,the day of ‘Ashoora’, and this month – meaning Ramadaan.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2006.

Why did the Prophet ﷺ fast on ‘Ashura

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashoora’.

He said, “What is this?”

They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moosa fasted on this day.”

He said, “We are closer to Moosa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2004)

Virtues for fasting on ‘Ashura

Fasting on ‘Ashura expiates the (minor) sins of the past year.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.

Narrated by Muslim, 1162

How to fast ‘Ashura

It is recommended when fasting ‘Ashura to also fast Taasua’ (the 9th Day of Muharram).

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:

When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora and told the people to fast, they said, “O Messenger of Allaah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Next year, if Allaah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had passed away.

Narrated by Muslim, 1134.

Important Note:

Fasting Taasua and ‘Ashura is recommended but not obligatory.

This year Taasua and ‘Ashura will be on Thursday 27th July and Friday 28th July, 2023.*

* Dates may vary based on local moonsighting.

The Day of Arafah (9th Day of Dhul Hijjah) is a very important day in Islam. It is the day on which the religion was perfected and Allah’s Favour was completed.

Narrated ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab:
Once a Jew said to me,

“O the chief of believers! There is a verse in your Holy Book Which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed as a day of celebration.”

‘Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, “Which is that verse?”

The Jew replied, “This day I have perfected your religion For you, completed My favor upon you, And have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (5:3)

‘Umar replied,”No doubt, we know when and where this verse was revealed to the Prophet. It was Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was standing at ‘Arafat (i.e. the Day of Hajj)”

Sahih al-Bukhari, 45 and Muslim, 3017

It is the day of forgiveness of sins, freedom from the Fire for the people who are there

‏ ‏‏

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“There is no day on which Allaah ransoms more of His slaves from the Fire than the day of ‘Arafah. He draws close then He boasts about them before the angels and says, ‘What do these people want?’”

Narrated by Muslim (1348).

Fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year

It was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was said about fasting on the Day of ‘Arafaah:

It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.
